Jeffrey O'Brien and Carl De Torres honed their style of visually driven storytelling while working at Wired in the mid-2000s. A few years later, over a couple of espressos, they were bemoaning the state of technology marketing. Agencies known for selling soap and tortilla chips were creating clever, but ultimately hollow, campaigns for companies whose products they didn't seem to understand.
Our founders figured they could do better. They started StoryTK on the belief that complex companies would benefit from the skillsets required to create great narrative and visual journalism.
With the help and direction of the celebrated designer Francesco Muzzi, they built a staff in the model of their ideal newsroom. It's populated by visually oriented writers and editors and editorially minded illustrators, photographers, animators, and designers. We use the skills that we developed at the highest rungs of media – research, narrative writing, infographics, data, and analytics – as a means of translation.
